The Invisible in Architecture
After the extensive student lecture series held at the TU Delft in 1978-88 Roemer van Toorn and Ole Bouman decided to work on a book with the same title. This encyclopaedic publication co-funded by the Ministry of Social Housing, consists of more than 500 pages reviewing and documenting many architecture projects by renowned and upcoming practices by the international contemporary architecture of the 90ties. Architecture is critically reviewed from an interdisciplinary perspective, understanding architecture from both a theoretical and practical perspective - as spatial cultural technique - giving form to society. The authors question architectures Postmodern move of the 90ties while delving into the deeper dimensions of the professions as a whole while advocating for an architecture otherwise by also looking at different alternative practices. The format of the book works like an interactive website before the internet was invented, inviting the reader to make connections between the 1000 layers it consists of, challenging the reader to form their (op)position while gaining knowledge from many different perspectives.
